Yakkity Yak

Hi friends!

You may have noticed I've been absent from the blogging world for a bit of time. Or maybe you didn't miss my ranting/snarky/funny/weird/sarcastical voice.  But I have, in fact, not typed a published word in 13 days.

Why, you ask?

'cause I ain't had nothin' to say.

Life has been truckin along. I've done lots of driving, lots of playing, lots of reading.  But not lots of crafting. I kind of lost my muse there for a week or so.  And now I'm getting it back, but making personalized stuff (with last names even, so I really REALLY can't post pictures), or projects that are going to take WAY longer than expected.

So instead of just remaining silent, I actually came up with a discussion question.  And I'd really love to hear from all of you on it.

How do you feel about comments?

Now, some of you, I already know your opinion. You in fact have wonderfully thought out comments about comments already on your blog.

But most of you, I really don't know about.

When do you leave comments?  What makes you NOT want to comment? Do you over think them? Under think them? Ramble too much?

My two cents: I LOVE comments. I love reading them, I love leaving them.  I happen to think I'm pretty smart, and my thoughts are worth reading.  But often, someone starts crying, so I don't get the chance. Or I don't know how to phrase what I'm feeling.

Or more often than not, there's already a bunch of comments.  And really, I'm just a silly little housewife, without much to say, and everyone else can say it better, and who really has time to read the 63rd comment on the exact same topic, and I'm just wasting my time 'cause someone else noticed the exact same thing as me and why bother.

Hmmm. I'd say I've got all the symptoms of having too much to say, and too many insecurities to just say it.

I want to be one of those people that my bloggy friends know, because I comment on their thoughts.
I want to have conversations, let people know who I am, what I'm all about.

If 12 people all said the same thing on my blog, I wouldn't be bugged. I'd take it as a sign that their words are true.

This whole post is more of a pep talk to myself. Which I've decided I'm going to be better about taking to heart.

Who cares how many comments there are.

My words still count too.

*please please PLEASE chime in. 'Cause I want to know you all too.  This blog has more than tripled in followers in the last few months, but I really only hear from the same people. I'd love to know everyone's voice!

Year in review

Hey all.

After posting this morning, I continued to think about all I've done in the last year. And then I went to the temple. And I realized that I focus too much on what everyone else does. Too much on what I didn't accomplish. Too much on the negative.

I've seen lots of year in reviews on other blogs, but didn't want to bother doing on for mine. But after realizing that I am full of worth, that my offerings are good enough, that I really am rather cool, I decided to compile a list of what I accomplished in 2010.

#1. I had a baby. Really, just on that note alone, I could call the year done. That is a major accomplishment! And since she's the bestest happiest, cutest thing around, I take great pleasure in that accomplishment.

#2. I built a table. My first knock off wood project, this was quite an adventure. I had a 1 month old, plus two other preschoolers, all the saws and such were at a different house, and I'd never really built a thing in my life before. But I did it (with Happy Mom's help, of course), and I love my table.

#3. I spent 19 HOURS sanding my living room. All I can say about that project is I'm glad it's over. It needed to be done, was annoying as anything, and put out so much dust I was cleaning for months. I also painted and redid some other stuff too. I'm so happy with the room now!

#4. I made an adorable room for my girls. Which I still love. It just makes me happy to walk in there and realize just how much work I put in, that actually paid off. The colors make me happy, the bunk bed gets lots of use, the quilts aren't falling apart - it's wonderful!

#5. I did a bunch of furniture stuff. I redid a chair, a dresser, made my own ottoman, bookcase, and bench for my kitchen table. I also fixed up a closet, and ripped all the wallpaper off in my kitchen (which I haven't blogged about because that's all I've done! That room needs a lot of work, hopefully this year!).

#6. I made my bathroom livable. Which was the project that first made me think I might be addicted to redos. (btw, the paint has only chipped a tiny bit on the vanity, and only where the kids use a handle as a step stool to climb up. It's holding up way better than I thought!)

#7. I re-designed my blog, making it look way cooler, added numbers, and doubled my followers (I'm up to 30!). I still remember the first time a stranger followed me - totally crazy. I still think you guys are crazy to read all my ramblings. Oh wait. I just insulted all of your intelligences. Shoot. Um, just forget I said any of that, and know that I'm grateful you're here!

#8. I became a crafting maniac, and did more than should be possible in 10 days.

#9. Read 90 books. Actually, I think it might have been more. But I added 90 books to my Goodreads list. But I'm trying to cut back. I've been sticking with my 3 at a time limit, and it's helping a lot.

#10. I watched my children grow. I played. I loved. I grew myself. And I wrote a list reminding myself that I'm pretty great.

You're great too. Thanks for sticking with me. Let's see where 2011 takes us!

What's your number?

Just thought I'd drop a note and let you know I've been playing with my blog. I now can number my comments! I've tried several different tutorials for this before, but none have ever worked for me. But I finally found one that did!

If you'd like to be all cool and marvelous too, check it out HERE.

(and I keep on getting more followers. Seriously. It's the oddest thing in the world that complete strangers read my randomness. But still, it is pretty darn cool to log on and see that number click up. So thanks you guys! You make me happy!)

*oh, and to answer some questions from the last few posts: if you make curtain clothes for other people, that makes you an Austrian nun. If it's for you, you're now Scarlett O'Hara. And if you want to look like you time travel, accidentally put your posting date for 20 days previously, publish your post, and then try to change it. You can change the date, but it still will publish early!)

New finds I now love

1. Good Eats. This is one I've loved for years. We do not have cable at our house. We did, for one full year back in 2007, but only because it was included in our rent. Since then, we just haven't had the desire spring that much dough for that much crud. But one of the tragedies of this is the total lack of Food Network. It's been a thorn in my side for years now.

However, I just discovered that they are now posting limited episodes of the best shows. We just spent an hour watching Alton Brown teach us about tuna, oil, and crackers. I have so missed the insane amount of knowledge I glean from these. (Full confessions, I remember staying up way too late watching an entire episode about pepper. Seriously. Who knew you could talk for 21 minutes just about pepper?)

And now, my kids are walking around the basement telling each other how to combine plastic parts of chicken with one part cucumber, a pear, and to bake until golden brown and delicious!

2. Confessions of a Cookbook Queen. This one was a link of a link of a link. But after perusing her blog for an hour or so (what can I say, all those yummy pictures!), I'm a new follower. Her stories are funny, the pictures are yummy, and it's a food blog full of stuff I might actually want to make! I'm totally picking up some candy corn to whip this one up later!

3. Uncle Jay explains again, a link of a link. Basically, he posts videos every Monday talking about the past week's news. He also puts things very basically, so kids could understand it, but the little jokes and side notes are all for the adults. Very funny, very easy, very worth a bookmark.

So that's what I spent my morning on
(instead of preparing my primary lesson, cleaning my house, or working on a project that was supposed to be easy and amazing and blogged about this morning, but instead has turned frustrating, complicated, and procrastinated for another day!) What new things have caught your fancy recently?

Can't keep this one to myself

So after rolling on the floor for several minutes (and confusing my daughter about what exactly was so flippin funny), I knew I could not keep this site to myself any longer.

What site you ask? Cake Wrecks It's professional cakes that are really, REALLY bad. Most of them you can't believe people had to pay money for.

Some times they provoke a smile, sometimes a groan, sometimes a chuckle, but sometimes it's a good thing that we don't allow drinks by the computer. I'm glad I've never had to clean sprayed apple juice off the monitor.

Check it out. She updates it daily.

Wow, I'm cool!

Ok, so now people might actually click on this thing once in a while . . . . The pressure is on to sound cool!

As I've written before, one of my favorite blog sites is Momformation.com. I love the down to earth honesty, the fun ideas, and the chance to chat with some other moms about real life topics. I made a comment a couple of days ago about one of my favorite websites - Starfall.com, on an entry, and yesterday it was reviewed. She even linked to my blog! Wow, I might let some of this go to my head. . . .Not that anyone reads me anyway!

I LOVE starfall. It's very educational without any preachiness or stupid ads all over it. My 4 year old loves it just as much as my 2 year old (and Buddy is even starting to be able to find his way around it by himself!) Anyone with pre-readers to early readers should check it out. It really is fun.

Now excuse me while I go do my little happy dance at being recognized!
