Read with me (+ a giveaway)

I haven't done a read with me post in ages, but I have a perfect excuse for one today!

Who want's a new book!

Yup - Sadie Hoffmiller #10 is out!  This time, Sadie travels to Southern Utah and gets sucked into another mystery.  She kind of goes kicking and screaming into it, and then somehow actually gets asked by the police to help out this time!  It's a new experience

for sure.

It's another winner for Josi Kilpack.  A couple of plot points I saw coming, but by and large I was surprised over and over - especially at the "who-done-it" moment.  I loved it.

Now, let's talk recipes.  First off:
these are by my dad!  And  it's honestly some of the best dutch oven I've ever had. When we were testing these, a couple of the other bakers were surprised at them.  They felt that dutch oven should be more of just throw some stuff in and leave it alone.  And there's nothing wrong with doing that!  But with the extra steps that my dad always put in, it goes from "ho-hum" meal (which is what I usually think about dutch oven) to some of the BEST cooking I've ever eaten.

Oh, and the fudge is AWESOME.  And don't forget Cafe Rio's sweet pork with lime rice hmmmmm, I'm getting hungry just typing these up!

. . . . .Where was I? Oh yah - the give away!  I've got an autographed copy of Rocky Road to give away.  If you'd like to win, just leave a comment here with your favorite dessert (bonus points if you give me the recipe!). I'll take submissions until Thursday, September 5 at oh 8:00 pm, and then I'll announce the winner after that!

  4. That is great! I love your mom and dad (well, the whole family, really). I've never read a Josi Kilpack book, but I've been intrigued by the idea of mixing murder and great recipes. :) My current favorite dessert (if I'm feeling a desire for healthy treats) is called Raw Cashew Dreamcake... it's a cheesecake that is dairy free. I know it sounds odd, but the last time I made it, the comments included words like, "divine" and "best dessert ever." It's REALLY good. Here's the recipe: http://www.mynewroots.org/site/2011/01/raw-cashew-dreamcake-2/
When I don't want to be healthy, my current favorite is rice krispie truffles. Basically just make your standard rice krispie treats. I usually make a fairly large batch and then split them into separate bowls and add peanut butter to one, nutella to another, and I've tried dry cake mix. Then you roll them into balls, about 3/4 inch (but you can do whatever size you want) and dip them in melted chocolate. After they're mostly set (but not entirely), I add sprinkles of some kind to differentiate. Chopped peanuts, chocolate sprinkles, colorful cake sprinkles... They're pretty awesome.

  5. This is #10?! I think I have missed a few. I think the last one I read was Blackberry Crumble. So fun that your Dad's recipes are in there. My favorite dessert is called Barber Shop Dessert. It has a nut crust on the bottom, a sweet cream cheese layer, a chocolate pudding layer, a whip cream layer and shaved chocolate and nuts on top. Really yummy!

  6. Um.. Pick me!! (Last time I said I never win anything and I did... Think I should try that trick again?) I think it is SO great that you put Dad's recipes in there. Ol' Dad. Love that guy!

As for my favorite dessert. Lately I am all about the cookies. I want to eat them every day! But there is one cookie that I dream about. (No, I'm not kidding. It has been in my dreams a few times... I should probably get out more.) I'm too lazy to tell you the whole recipe, but here is a link:

I wasn't a fan of the frosting they made. I prefer almond flavored butter-cream. Yum... I hope I have tasty dreams again!

  12. My favorite dessert in the world is the coconut cream cake my husband invented after reading the second Lemony Snicket book to our three kids. They always choose something to do from each book they read together. I usually hate coconut, but one bite of his cake had me hooked. I requested it for mother's day and keep devising my next opportunity to get him to make it again. I don't have the recipe, curses. I hope I can still win! I really truly want to win a copy of Josi's book.

  13. I have read most of Josi's books and the food all sounds WONDERFUL!! I really love chocolate but my mom's homemade ice cream with homemade chocolate sauce is what we had tonight and that is always a winner. Here are the recipes:

    Grandma's Ice Cream
    Makes 1 gallon

    2 cups sugar
    4 eggs or equivalent Eggbeaters
    1 quart heavy whipping cream
    dash of salt
    2 tablespoons vanilla extract
Enough whole milk to fill up your ice cream freezer- a little less than a gallon

Stir eggs, sugar, whipping cream, vanilla and salt together until the sugar is mostly disolved. Pour in to your gallon size ice cream freezer can and fill to the top with whole milk. Stir to combine. Then freeze as directed in your freezer manual. Top with topping of your choice or just eat it plain. Best when eaten when still soft but you can store in the freezer and then soften before serving and it is pretty good then too!!!

    Chocolate Sauce

2 squares unsweetended baking chocolate- the cocoa/butter equivalent
    1 cup cold water
    2 cups sugar
    1 pinch salt
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Stir the chocolate and water in a large cooking pot on the stove over medium heat until the chocolate melts and the mixture starts to thicken. Take it off the stove and add the sugar and salt. Place back on burner and then bring to a rolling boil and boil for 3 minutes. Do not stir while it is boiling. Then take off heat and add the vanilla extract and stir to mix. This should be enough for 1 gallong of ice cream depending on how much people use.

If you try it let me know what you think!

  14. I'm so excited that the book is out! I'm surprised by how quickly I can read the "Sadie" books. Favorite dessert lately has been chocolate covered popcorn with M&Ms. I just pop a bag of microwave popcorn, melt some white chocolate in a double boiler and then add peanut M&Ms and stir like crazy. Delish!

  15. Oh man!! I can't wait to read it! Can I say that I just LOVE these books?? Anyway - here's my favorite cookie recipe...

2 - 3 over ripe bananas - mashed (depending on size. 2 big or 3 smaller)
    1 1/2 C unsweetened applesauce
    5 egg whites
    2/3 C Agave
    1 1/2 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp vanilla
3 C Old Fashioned Rolled Oats (optional)
    5 - 6 C whole wheat flour
2 - 3 cups semi sweet chocolate chips

In a mixing bowl combine bananas, applesauce and agave. blend in egg whites and then add vanilla and baking soda. Add oatmeal and let sit for a couple of minutes before adding flour. The flour might need more depending on the moistness - since none of the sugar is powdery. Then lastly, stir in chocolate chips. preheat oven to 350. Spray a large cookie sheet or spray parchment on a cookie sheet...drop by small ice cream scoop or small spoons, can fit 2 dozen on a tray. These do not flatten, and I haven't really found a good way to flatten them, so just accept the round tops. They almost look like cake pops..,lol.
Bake for 8 minutes. Do not over bake, as they tend to try out. They will not be golden except on the bottom.
    enjoy!
